Sam Torrance

Ryder Cup winning captain, Golf

Sam is one of the most popular and charismatic golfers on the professional world stage. His career has spanned over a remarkable 36 years, during which he has won 41 tournaments around the world and walked an impressive 16,000 miles in the process!

In 2005 Sam achieved one of the few honours he had not yet managed to in his career when he won the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit title, a feat which he promptly repeated in 2006 (winning 7 tournaments over the 2 seasons)!  Sam has found a new lease of life on the Seniors Tour, where he finds the competition as fierce as ever and the thrill of winning as great as ever.

In between tournaments, Sam takes his place in the BBC golf commentary box, where he is a regular member of their team at the Major golf events that they cover.  Along with a growing golf course design business and corporate golf events, Sam has found that life has now slowed down since he turned 50!

The Ryder Cup has played an enormous part in Sam’s life. He played in the great event an impressive eight times, becoming a stalwart of the team. One of the highlights of his career was sinking the winning putt for the European Team in 1985 at the Belfry, securing Europe’s first victory in 28 years.

It was fitting that this same venue played host to the most outstanding moment of his career, captaining the European Ryder Cup team to their memorable victory against the USA in September 2002. His fellow team members, the worldwide media and golf fans from far and wide complimented his exemplary leadership, which reminded us all of the correct atmosphere in which great sporting events should be contested. The famous victory put him at the centre of the world’s media attention, and made him a household name.
